Impacted teeth occur when a tooth cannot emerge from the gum line properly and damage other teeth, the gums, and the tooth itself. Tooth impaction can often be diagnosed early with routine dental appointments, including for impacted wisdom teeth. However, there are times when impacted teeth removal happens on an emergency basis. At Splendid Dental Woodlands, we provide for all of your needs.

Do You Have Impacted Teeth?

a doctor explaining impacted teethOne of the most important questions you may ask is this one. How do you know tooth impaction is occurring? Generally, impacted teeth can be seen on X-rays during a general dentistry appointment. We can tell from X-rays the tooth’s position and whether it will come in properly or if it will become trapped or cause damage to other teeth.  This is common with impacted wisdom teeth.

Some people may not have a warning about tooth impaction. For example, complications can happen in those around the age of 10 to 12 when the tooth comes in poorly and causes damage to those around it. In addition to this, the tooth may become stuck and unable to emerge, causing significant pain and discomfort fully. Left untreated, this can become an infection.

Do You Need Impacted Teeth Removal?

Many people wonder if they really do have to have impacted teeth removed. The answer to this is generally yes. The tooth will try to continue to push forward. This will cause potential problems, such as:

  • Pain
  • Nerve damage
  • Early decay in the tooth
  • Damage to the gumline
  • Infections
  • Misalignment of other teeth

When this happens, the problem can become an emergency. While Splendid Dental Woodlands offers impacted teeth removal as an emergency service when needed, it is best to schedule this type of procedure and have some time to plan for it.

Impacted Wisdom Teeth Removal

There are times when impacted wisdom teeth should be removed early on. You do not want to wait for them to start to emerge, usually around 18 to 25. Instead, we can remove them sooner, therefore reducing the risk of the wisdom teeth causing any other damage to the teeth in your mouth.

What Happens in Impacted Teeth Removal?

When you come in for tooth impaction, we will work with you to reduce your pain. We will use general anesthesia or local anesthesia to help reduce any pain present. Then, an oral surgeon will cut open the gum to expose the tooth. After careful planning, the surgeon can safely remove the tooth from the opening. They then close it up so that it starts to heal. Over the next few days, you may have some pain, but this will fade, especially when you follow the instructions given to you.
